First Steps Towards Avoiding Fraud
None of us likes tax day, but problems with the IRS can be much worse than what we can deal with. Endless radio campaigns pose the questions: Are you having problems with the IRS? Are you in debt in the tens of thousands of dollars?
These “slogans” can be heard daily as part of advertisements on the radio and television, and many more ads can be found posted all over the internet. The offer sounds tempting, and it’s too easy to fall for the bait.
Don’t look for a too-good-to-be-true fix, warns Chicago lawyer Joseph Shun Mendoza Ravago, who helps clients stuck in financial hardships, in addition to practicing law. Also a CPA, Ravago has expert knowledge in corporate, taxation, bankruptcy, immigration, and real estate cases. According to Shun, the greatest danger is accepting help from a firm that comes off as a law firm, but in truth, isn’t. These firms are not licensed, and run the risk of causing problems rather than fixing them. Clients with immigration and foreclosure issues are often targeted as being desperate for a quick fix.
Mr. Ravago states,
Currently there are many issues that intimidate clients, including debt and the need to file bankruptcy, tax and IRS issues, immigration issues and foreclosure cases. There are many non-legal companies that try to provide solutions such as debt consolidation or tax solution companies. They can make lofty promises and yet not face any negative ramifications if they fail because they are not regulated or licensed. Attorneys cannot make those promises because we have to answer to our licensing board.
